Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry in Tracy, CA

If the idea of going to the dentist makes you anxious, you may be hesitant to schedule an appointment for a simple cleaning or oral surgery. Sedation dentistry can help!

Your oral health is extremely important to your overall well-being. With sedation dentistry, you can receive professional, quality dental care while avoiding the nervousness you may experience while visiting the dentist.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of intravenous, inhaled, or oral medications. Sedatives help to relax patients and reduce their dental anxiety by putting them in a drowsy or sleep-like state. Sedated patients still retain some level of consciousness, and can still respond to commands.

Sedation dentistry can improve our patient’s quality of life by aiding those with severe dental phobias or severe gag reflexes. It is also an excellent option for patients that have pre-existing medical conditions, such as those who are developmentally disabled or who have a low pain threshold.

Why Choose Sedation Dentistry?

Reduces Dental Anxiety

Anxious patients may be resistant to dental care and can be harder to treat. Sedation dentistry uses various forms of sedation to ease patients throughout the duration of their appointment.

No Pain or Discomfort During Treatment

The most obvious benefit of sedatives at Miller's Family Dentistry is that you will feel little to no pain throughout your dental procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and intravenous sedation provide a calming effect that can ease your nerves.

What Are the Different Types of Sedation?

Inhaled Sedation (Nitroux Oxide)

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a sedative that can be given to almost anyone, including young children. Using a small mask, our patients will receive nitrous oxide (laughing gas) through the mask that is worn over the nose. Recovery time is quick and you will be able to drive yourself home after your visit to our dental office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, our dentist will give you medication on the day of surgery, typically in pill form. This is administered about an hour prior to when your procedure begins. Oral sedatives can make you groggy, and you may even fall asleep during treatment. However, you’ll still be able to communicate with your dental professional by being awakened with a gentle nudge. Since oral sedation temporarily affects your memory and motor skills that last several hours, you’ll need a family member or friend to drive you home after your visit.
